The History of the Downing Corporation
The experience of Timothy R. Downing and Brenton W. Downing in the home building and construction industry began in their youths. They developed fundamental skills under the instruction of their father and uncle in Downing and Dye, Inc, a home building and development firm. Bernard Downing and Charles Dye operated that firm until the late 1960's.

When the home building industry slowed in the late 1960's, Downing and Dye amicably severed their business relationship and Downing Homes, Inc. was created in 1969. The corporation was operated principally by Bernard E. Downing for a period of years while Brent Downing completed his degree work at Rochester Institute of Technology and completed two tours of duty in Viet Nam as a member of the US Navy Seabees. Thereafter, he served as a production foreman for the Xerox Corporation. Tim Downing served as Deputy Director of Public Works for the Town of Pittsford for a period of six years. Tim and Brent Downing remained peripherally involved with Downing Homes, Inc., to the extent consistent with their other activities.

As the home building industry became more active in the mid and late 1970's, Tim and Brent Downing returned full time to work for Downing Homes, Inc. Tim Downing conceived the Wood Creek Homeowners Association project which was sold subsequent to obtaining development approvals. It was thereafter successfully developed by others. Downing Homes, Inc. developed numerous other condominiums and subdivisions in the Rochester area.

In the early 1980's, Bernard Downing began to phase out of his active management role in the corporation. Tim Downing became President of the corporation and Brent Downing took on the roles of Vice President and Treasurer.

Under the leadership of Tim and Brent Downing, the corporation was diversified and continued to prosper. While gaining an increasingly broad reputation as a quality custom homebuilder, Downing Homes, Inc., as well as its principals, have participated in ventures such as multi-family construction and commercial and office park construction. Linden Oaks Office park was conceived by the Downings, and Tim Downing served as a managing partner of this venture until mid-1989.

With the participation of Downing Homes, Inc in the commercial renovation of the Fairport Box Factory, it became advisable in 1987 to form Downing Construction of New York, Inc., with Brent Downing as President and Treasurer and Tim Downing as Vice President. The Box factory renovation was completed in mid-1989, and for their work on this project, Downing Construction received a first place national award in the category of Historic Restoration form the American Architectural and Manufacturing Association.

In 1987, Downing Construction of New York, Inc. began bidding other commercial construction jobs. The first projects awarded were modular classrooms for the Rochester City School District and a modular office building for the City of Rochester Forestry Department. In May 1989, Downing Construction was awarded the New York State BOCES contract for modular classrooms. By the end of 1990, the corporation had delivered modular classrooms to numerous school districts throughout New York State, Conneticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts. In 1991 name of the company was legally changed to The Downing Corporation. Their manufacturing facility is located in Ontario NY.
